Four friends from the west county, Guinea Lane Saxophone Quartet formed in 2019 by Rob Bartholomew (soprano sax), Barbara Dalton (alto sax), Jude Jackson (tenor sax) and Fiona Stamp. (baritone sax). Almost immediately, the Covid lockdowns halted our progress but we roared back in 2021 with renewed vigour. Although we started off playing a wide range of the more standard sax quartet material, we have chosen to take the road less travelled by specializing in traditional folk music of the British Isles. We have arranged some ourselves, and others we have sourced or commissioned from well-known arrangers including Karen Street, Tim Hill, Bronco Hutchins and others with a sensitivity and empathy for traditional music. We are confident in saying that our repertoire is wholly original, despite having been around for hundreds of years, in many cases. Having played ourselves in with numerous local events and supporting the esteemed folk duo Belshazzar’s Feast, we made our festival debut at Sidmouth 2022 in Blackmore Gardens where we drew a large and appreciative crowd. This was at least in part due to having previously performed in two busking spots on the promenade which stopped the passing pedestrian traffic in their tracks (and clogs). We believe that by playing traditional music as a saxophone quartet we are doing something both original and captivating, as has been proven by our enthusiastic audience response. Now, GLSQ are looking forward to playing in many more folk festivals and diverse other events in 2023.
