Positional calling is a gender-free teaching and calling strategy for contra that, at its best, enhances dancers’ awareness of patterns and relationships within the choreography, helping them learn more quickly and dance with more skill. Positional calling can also help callers improve their set awareness, ability to help dancers recover, and more — in addition to creating a welcoming environment for everyone. In this workshop, which is Part 1 of 2, we will expand upon some of the ideas introduced in the Positional Dancing workshop (and thus callers are encouraged to attend that session) to think about how positional strategies can improve the way we teach and call contra dances.
