Portmanteau

Portmanteau is a dynamic and modern balfolk band combining traditional folk music with altogether too many synthesisers.

The band’s members are experienced musicians who are also active in various other musical projects (Electric Folk Dance Party, Trip Hazard, Flying Cat), bringing diverse influences to their balfolk performances.

Their instrumental expertise translates from the acoustic realm to the digital by their use of wind synthesisers and an eMelodeon alongside conventional keyboards and sequencers. This allows the band to preserve their energetic, danceable style even when not playing their "real" instruments, and retain variety and musicality in their playing.

Portmanteau are dedicated to growing the balfolk scene in the UK. Their performances are designed to attract new audiences and encourage participation in this vibrant and inclusive dance culture.
